Saint Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church

OUR ST. SPYRIDON PARISH

A group of 35 Greek families in the Pullman neighborhood, in the south side of Chicago, decided to establish a Greek Orthodox Church dedicated to Saint Spyridon on December 12th, 1917.  The first church edifice was built in 1928 at 114th & South Park Ave., and the community remained there for over forty years.  In 1968, the community of Saint Spyridon purchased a new property in Palos Heights at the present site of St. Spyridon. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in September of 1975. In the years to follow, the community center and gymnasium were used for worship services until the church was built in 1986.  The new beautiful Byzantine Style Church was completed and consecrated on November 2 & 3, 1996 by His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos.   On Sunday, December 15, 1997 our community was blessed by the visit of the newly enthroned Archbishop of America, His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon on his first official visit to the Chicago Diocese. Today, we are a growing parish of nearly 300 families continuing the witness of our Orthodox faith and the heritage of the Saint Spyridon community.
